All our pieces at Thorn and Thunder are either Rhodium plated 925 sterling silver or 18ct Gold Vermeil on Sterling Silver. You won't find us offering anything less than this.
Gold Vermeil
In simpler terms, vermeil is a layer of gold applied over 925 sterling silver. For something to be called vermeil, it needs to have at least 10 carats and 2.5 microns thick gold. 925 Sterling silver is an ideal base for material as it is renowned for its brilliance and durability.
Vermeil can be produced by either fire-gilding or electrolysis; however, fire-gilding is outdated, and most vermeil produced today is made via electrolysis.
Our Gold Vermeil
At Thorn and Thunder, our Gold Vermeil is a minimum of 2.5 microns thick and made from 18ct gold applied onto 925 sterling silver. We do not use lower carat gold or base metals like nickel or brass. This applies to all our gold jewellery, including our necklaces, which are also crafted from Gold Vermeil.
Why do we only use gold vermeil instead of gold plated?
Gold-plated jewellery uses base metals like brass and nickel that are covered with a thin layer of gold at least 0.5 - 1 microns thick.
Gold Vermeil ...
- is longer lasting and more durable,
- uses a higher quality of metals,
- is hypoallergenic as it doesn’t use nickel or materials which contain nickel,
- has at least 2.5 microns of gold plating whereas gold plating has only 0.5-1 microns.

Rhodium Plated Sterling Silver
925 sterling silver consists of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper. Our silver jewellery is plated with rhodium, enhancing both its shine and durability. Due to its rarity, rhodium is among the most expensive precious metals. Every sterling silver item we offer is stamped with “925” to guarantee its authenticity.
